About this course

Working in retail is much more than just standing in a shop and reacting to the customers who may come along. Anyone working in retail at any level is part of a team and the skills required are nationally recognised in the NOCN Certificate of Retail Knowledge. Not only will this course give you working knowledge of the retail industry but will also give you crucial employability skills that can be transferred into any retail role.

What will I do on this course ?

During this course you will:

  • Develop an understanding of how retail businesses differ in size and type and how this affects the different retail occupations.
  • Understand the importance of customer service to a retail business including how to effectively deal with complaints and how to adapt to meet the needs of individual customers.
  • Experience a current retail store as a mystery shopper and reflect on your experience as a customer.
  • Know your employment rights and responsibilities alongside those of your employer.
  • Understand how product information can be used to promote sales.
  • Be able to handle financial transactions responsibly and to know the procedures that apply when handling other peoples’ money.
  • Understand the principles of stock control. Including how to move, handle, store and replenish stock.
  • How health and safety and security is put in place in a retail environment.

Qualifications you will complete

  • NOCN Level 1 Certificate in Retail Knowledge
  • City and Guilds Level 1 Award in Introduction to Customer Service

Who is it for ?

This course is for anyone wishing to increase their knowledge of the retail industry. It is also relevant to anyone wishing to change career paths to the retail industry or for someone looking to back up their existing knowledge with an approved certificate.

How is this course assessed ?

There is not a formal examination for this test and you will be assessed in a variety of ways by your tutor. Your final assessment will consist of a portfolio of work that you create over the time of the course.

What could I do next ?

Possession of the NCON qualification will give successful applicants an edge over other applicants for carers in the retail industry.

  • Level 2 certificate in retail knowledge;
  • Level 2 certificate in Customer Service ;
  • Retail apprenticeships and
